Day Breaks Career Digs Record as Valkyries Sweep Trailblazers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team was in a celebratory mood on Tuesday evening, as they swept North Greenville 3-0 inside the Weisiger Center.

Converse improves to 16-5 overall and 10-2 in Conference Carolinas action this season. The Valkyries historic season continues to improve as they reach double-digit conference wins for the first time in program history. Mackenzie Day reset the programs career dig record in the opening set on Tuesday evening. The graduate student passed her former teammate Liz Yohe and became just the second player in program history to reach 1700 career digs.

North Greenville drops to 11-13 overall and 8-4 in Conference Carolinas play. The loss also drops the Trailblazers to second place in Northwest Division standings, while Converse moves into the top spot in the rankings.  

The Valkyries opened the match on a 9-3 run in the first set of action. Converse continued to put the pressure on the Trailblazers and eventually held an 18-13 advantage. A quick 4-0 spurt by North Greenville had the Trailblazers knocking on the door down 18-17. Converse closed out the first set on a 7-3 run against North Greenville.

In the second set, the two teams were deadlocked at five in the early moments of the period. Converse made the first move, going on a 10-2 run and increasing their lead to 15-7. Despite a late run by the Trailblazers, Converse won the second set 25-16.

In the third set, North Greenville opened up the period on a 8-5 run against the Valkyries. Following a timeout from Converse, the Valkyries went on a 7-0 run and took back both the momentum and the lead. Leading 19-12, the Valkyries allowed North Greenville on a late 5-1 run to pull back within striking distance of Converse at 20-17. Converse closed out the match and completed the sweep with a 25-19 third set win.

Converse finished with 58 points, 42 kills, 11 aces, 5 blocks, 39 assists, and 50 digs. Megan Carpenter led the team with eight kills, while Ariel Bryant and Tori Barr each had seven kills. Bryant and Jayden Johnson each had a trio of aces on the evening, while Tori Barr led the team with three blocks. Alysha Arroyo led the team with 21 assists, and Jayden Johnson finished second on the team with 17 assists. Mackenzie Day led the team with 19 digs, and Ariel Bryant finished second on the team with 15 digs.

Next Up:
The Converse volleyball team will be back in action tomorrow night against King. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside the Weisiger Center.
