Valkyries Survive Frightful Scare From King

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team defeated King 3-1 on Wednesday night inside the Weisiger Center.

Converse improves to 17-5 overall and 11-2 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries are now 6-1 in the Northwest Division standings following a pair of wins against King and North Greenville this week. Meanwhile, King falls to 7-9 overall and 5-7 in Conference Carolinas play.

The Valkyries opened the match on a 9-3 run against the Tornado. Moments later they held a 14-6 advantage against King, before the Tornado began to make a move. King rallied with a 5-0 run and pulled within three points of the Valkyries at 14-11. A timely 6-0 spurt by the Valkyries offense put Converse ahead 20-11 over King. Converse went on to win the opening set 25-18 against the Tornado.

In the second set, the Valkyries raced out to a 7-3 advantage against King. The Tornado used a 3-0 spurt to stay within striking distance of Converse at 7-6. The Valkyries then countered with a 6-0 run to take the momentum back against King. Despite trailing 17-12 the Valkyries were unable to put away a pesky Tornado team. King won five straight points to tie the match at 17, then won six of the final nine points to steal the second set away from the Valkyries.

Converse opened up the third set with a 6-1 run against the Tornado defense. The Valkyries eventually held a 13-7 advantage over King, before the Tornado rallied with a 4-0 spurt of their own. Late in the third set the two teams were tied at 21, then the Valkyries won four of the final five points to win the set 25-22.

In the fourth set, the Valkyries once again raced out to a 7-3 lead over King. The Tornado rallied and stayed within striking distance of Converse throughout the set. Leading 16-15, Converse used a 4-1 spurt to take back the momentum over King. The Valkyries closed out the set on a 5-2 run and won the fourth set 25-19.

Converse finished with 72 points, 57 kills, 5 aces, 10 blocks, 52 assists, and 105 digs. Megan Carpenter led the team with 16 kills, Noemia Chiacchio finished second with 10 kills, and Tori Barr added nine kills. Alayah Robertson finished with seven blocks and Tori Barr was second on the team with three blocks each. Alysha Arroyo led the team with 29 assists, Jayden Johnson finished second with 16 assists, and Mackenzie Day added 6 assists. Ariel Bryant finished with a team best 27 digs, Day added 26 digs, and Arroyo finished third on the team with 13 digs.

The Converse volleyball team will be back in action on Friday evening at Shorter University.
