Converse Volleyball Weekend Recap: Valkyries Split With North Greenville & Belmont Abbey

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team went 1-1 this week with a five set loss to North Greenville on Friday evening and a 3-0 sweep of Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon.
 
At the end of the weekend, the Valkyries are now 15-5 overall and 9-2 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries loss to North Greenville on Friday night now has Converse sitting in second place in the Northwest Division standings.
 
Mackenzie Day is now on record watch for the Valkyries, the graduate student libero is now less than 10 digs away from breaking the program career record.
 
Match One: North Greenville 3, Converse 2
  • Converse was ready to go in the opening set against the Trailblazers, as they jumped out to a 12-5 advantage. The Valkyries continued to put the pressure on and eventually held a 20-13 lead over North Greenville.
  • The Valkyries won the opening set 25-16 and finished with 17 kills in the period. Converse also hit .405 for the set, their best of the evening.
  • In the second set, Converse jumped out to a 5-1 lead before North Greenville countered with a 4-0 run of their own to tie up the match.
  • Converse held a 14-11 lead midway through the second set, then North Greenville used a 10-2 run to steal the momentum away from the Valkyries. The Trailblazers won the second set by a final score of 25-18.
  • In the third set, the Trailblazers played off of their momentum from the previous set and held an early 8-5 advantage. Moments later, the Trailblazers lead had blossomed into a 17-11 lead over the Valkyries.
  • Converse attempted to counter the Trailblazers run, but were only able to pull within a pair of points at 17-15. North Greenville won the third set 25-19 over the Valkyries.
  • In the fourth set, the Valkyries came back focused and jumped out to a 13-5 lead over North Greenville. Converse continued to build upon their momentum and eventually held a 21-12 lead over the Trailblazers. The Valkyries tied the match up at two sets each, after capturing the fourth set by a final score of 25-16.
  • In the fifth and final set of the night, the two squads were deadlocked through the first eight points of the period. North Greenville made the first move and eventually held a 10-6 advantage over the Valkyries.
  • Following a timeout that brought the Valkyries back within striking distance, North Greenville used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 14-8. Converse made a late rally against the Trailblazers but ran out of time as they fell 15-12 in the final set.
  • Converse finished with 69 points, 57 kills, 8 aces, 4 blocks, 54 assists and 74 digs against the Trailblazers.
  • Ariel Bryant led the team with 16 kills, Noemia Chiacchio finished second on the team with 12 kills and Tori Barr added 11 kills. Jayden Johnson led the team with 27 assists, followed by Alysha Arroyo with 18 assists. Mackenzie day led the team with 16 digs, Chiacchio finished second on the team with 14 digs and Johnson finished third on the team with 13 digs.
 
Match Two: Converse 3, Belmont Abbey 0
  • Despite playing in a fifth set the night before, the Valkyries came out focused and ready to go against the Crusaders. Converse jumped out to a 4-1 lead and eventually built a 14-7 advantage over Belmont Abbey.
  • Converse held a 19-13 lead over the Crusaders, before Belmont Abbey went on a small run to close the scoring gap against Converse. Holding on to a 23-20 lead, the Valkyries closed out the set on a Chiacchio kill and service ace.
  • In the second set, the Valkyries raced out to a 9-4 advantage against Belmont Abbey. A timely 7-1 run had the Valkyries out in front 18-10. Converse went on to win the second set 25-15 over the Crusaders.
  • In the third set, Converse fell behind 7-2 and was forced to use a timeout. The timeout helped the Valkyries as they were able to regroup and counter with a 12-3 run to take back the lead.
  • The Valkyries never looked back from then on in the third set, as they won the final period 25-18.
  • Converse finished with 62 points, 46 kills, 10 aces, 6 blocks, 39 assists, and 42 digs. Chiacchio led the team with 14 kills, Alayah Robertson and Tori Barr both tied for second on the team with seven kills each. Alysha Arroyo led the team with 19 assists, while Johnson finished second on the team with 18 assists. Mackenzie Day led the team with 18 digs, while both Bryant and Chiacchio finished with 7 digs each.

Next Up:
The Converse volleyball team will be back in action this Tuesday night against North Greenville. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. against the Trailblazers.
