SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team fell 3-1 to #8 Newberry on Friday night at Weisiger Stadium.
With the loss Converse falls to 7-7 overall this season and 5-7 in South Atlantic Conference action. Meanwhile, Newberry improves to 12-2 overall and 8-2 in South Atlantic Conference play.
In the opening quarter, Newberry came out ready to go as Wibien Dahmen and Tamsin Bangert both scored in the first quarter of action. The Wolves outshot the Valkyries 4-3 in the opening period and attempted one corner in the period.
In the second quarter, the Wolves continued to put pressure on the Valkyries with a goal from Emma Westbrook. Converse outshot Newberry 7-3 in the frame and recorded a quartet of penalty corners in the period.
Following a scoreless third quarter,
Caroline Blair found
Catalina Pistaccio for the Valkyries lone goal of the night. Pistaccio now has a team best 11 goals on the season.
Johanna Balks finished the match with seven saves, while
Alina Puentes recorded four saves in the loss.
