Valkyries Endure Groundhog-Day-esque Draw With King

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's soccer team (8-1-4, 5-0-3 Conference Carolinas) found themselves playing the role of Phil Connors in 1993's time-loop rom-com "Groundhog Day" as their Thursday match against the King University Tornado (3-5-4, 2-3-4 Conference Carolinas) ended the same way their Tuesday match did: with a late King goal forcing a 1-1 draw.

Sophomore goalkeeper Mateo Sanchez played all 90 minutes of the match in the box for Converse. He recorded two saves on three shots on goal from the Tornado.

Both teams managed two shots in the first half, and neither found the back of the net, and the game went to halftime even at 0-0.

Junior Luis Fortuce broke open the scoring just under 17 minutes into the second half as senior Jaxon Keene earned his fourth assist of the season.

Just over 15 minutes later, King, like they did on Tuesday, netted a second-half goal to draw the game even at 1-1.

Both teams had a chance to score in the final 15 minutes but neither was able to as, for the second time in three days, the Valkyries and Tornado drew 1-1.

The Valkyries return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 26 as Conference Carolinas play continues in Wilson, North Carolina against Barton. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 P.M.
