Converse Volleyball Sweeps Lees-McRae To Stay Perfect In Divisional Play

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team swept Lees-McRae 3-0 on Wednesday night inside the Weisiger Center.
 
Converse improves to 14-4 overall this season and 8-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries win over Lees-McRae snapped a three game losing streak to Bobcats, and keeps Converse perfect in the Northwest Division standings. Lees-McRae falls to 9-8 overall and 1-6 in Conference Carolinas play this season.
 
The two squads were evenly matched throughout the first set and neither side yielded an inch to the other. Knotted at 14 midway through the period, Lees-McRae made the first move and used a 4-0 run to take the first significant lead of the match. Trailing 19-15, Converse went on a 6-0 run, snatching both the lead and the momentum back against the Bobcats. Moments later the set was tied at 23, but the Valkyries won the final two points of the period on back-to-back kills from Noemia Chiacchio and Megan Carpenter.
 
In the second set, Converse jumped out to a 7-2 lead over the Bobcats. The Valkyries eventually built their lead to an 18-9 advantage over Lees-McRae. The Bobcats then used a 6-1 run to pull back within a trio of points at 19-16. Converse was able to close out the second set on a 6-2 run and defeat the Bobcats by a final set score of 25-18.
 
In the third set, the two teams were tied at nine, before Converse made the first move of the period. A 4-0 spurt gave the Valkyries a 13-9 advantage midway through the third period. Converse continued to put the pressure on and eventually held a 22-14 lead over Lees-McRae. Converse won the final set on three straight kills from Tori Barr, Ariel Bryant and Megan Carpenter.
 
Converse finished with 52 points, 38 kills, 10 aces, 4 blocks, 38 assists, and 46 digs. Noemia Chiacchio led the Valkyries with 12 kills, Carpenter and Barr both finished with seven kills each. Bryant and Chiacchio both led the team with a trio of aces each against the Bobcats. Alysha Arroyo finished with a team high 20 assists, and Jayden Johnson finished second on the team with 13 assists. Mackenzie Day led the team with 14 digs and Ariel Bryant finished second on the team with 10 digs.
 
Next Up:
The Converse volleyball team will be back in action this Friday night at North Greenville. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Tigerville.
