HARROGATE, TENN. – The Converse University field hockey team fell 1-0 to Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, Converse falls to 7-6 overall and 5-6 in South Atlantic Conference action. Meanwhile, Lincoln Memorial improved to 2-9 overall and 1-9 in South Atlantic Conference play.
The Valkyries came out hot in the opening minutes of the contest, taking a bevy of shots against the Railsplitters goalkeeper. Converse outshot Lincoln Memorial 5-1 in the opening frame and 6-4 in the first half of action. The Railsplitters made four saves in the opening half and kept the match scoreless during halftime.
Converse amped up the pressure in the third quarter, outshooting Lincoln Memorial 7-1 and attempting 5-1 penalty corners during the frame. In the fourth quarter the Valkyries still outshot the Railsplitters 4-2 and attempted a trio of corners in the frame. However, luck was not on the Valkyries side as Lincoln Memorial scored in the 50
th minute of the contest. The Valkyries ran out of time to score the equalizing goal and suffered their first loss in series history to the Railsplitters.
Amparo Figueroa and
Chelsy Bunse each attempted five shots in the contest to lead the Valkyries offense. Figueroa finished with a team high four shots on goal, while Bunse finished second with a trio of shots on target.
Catalina Pistaccio attempted three total shots in the loss, while Carolina Blair contributed a pair of shots against Lincoln Memorial.
Johanna Balks finished the match with three saves for Converse.

The Converse Field Hockey team will be back in action Friday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium. The Valkyries will battle Newberry starting at 5:30 p.m.
