Converse Field Hockey Weekend Recap: Valkyries Split with Mount Olive and Coker

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team had an exciting weekend of action at Weisiger stadium with games against Mount Olive and Coker.
 
After a weekend of game action, the Valkyries field hockey team improves to 7-2 overall this season and 5-2 in South Atlantic Conference action.  
 
Game One: Mount Olive 4, Converse 3
  • Converse struck first in the opening quarter against Mount Olive, as Amparo Figueroa scored on an unassisted goal.
  • The offenses were virtually non-existent for either side as a total of two shots were taken in the first period of action.
  • In the second quarter, Annefleur Moerkerken tied the matchup five minutes into the period. It was short lived however, as Chelsy Bunse found Figueroa for the Valkyries second goal of the match.
  • Mount Olive struck again with just five minutes to go in the period off a goal from Jemimah Kriechelberg. The Trojans outshot the Valkyries 8-1 in the second quarter.
  • In the third quarter, Rosie Migounoff scored for Mount Olive and gave the Trojans their first lead of the match. Mount Olive ended the period outshooting the Valkyries 5-0.
  • In the final quarter, Migounoff scored once more to make it a 4-2 Mount Olive advantage. Figueroa found Pilarski a few minutes later to give the Converse offense life late in the match. Time ran out before the Valkyries could complete the comeback against Mount Olive.
  • Figueroa finished the match with two goals and an assist for the Valkyries, while Chelsy Bunse and Sage Pilarski, added a goal and an assist each in the loss. Johanna Balks led the team with eight saves against Mount Olive.  
 
Game Two: Converse 4, Coker 1
  • Converse celebrated senior day on Sunday afternoon and the offense lit up the scoreboard on the offensive end.
  • Senior Catalina Pistaccio took on the whole Cobras defense and scored the opening goal of the game.
  • The Valkyries outshot Coker 6-2 in the opening frame and attempted a trio of penalty corners in the quarter as well.
  • Emily Whitlow scored with five minutes left in the half off a penalty stroke. The goal gave the Valkyries a pivotal 2-0 advantage heading into the halftime break.
  • Following a scoreless third quarter, Kaiya Sabur scored the Cobras first goal of the match and pulled within a goal of the Valkyries.
  • Two minutes later, Julia Mann found Francesca Ezcurra for the Valkyries third goal of the match. Converse capped off an exciting senior day when senior Lara Toranzo found Pistaccio for her second goal of the match.
  • Pistaccio scored a pair of goals in the match, while Ezcurra and Whitlow also contributed in the win. Mann and Toranzo each recorded assists for the Valkyries offense.
  • Freshman Tess Koppers picked up her first collegiate win on Sunday afternoon, and recorded a pair of saves in the process.
 
Next Up:
The Converse Field Hockey team will be back in action this coming Tuesday night against Limestone University.
