McCutchen and Lyman Shine as Valkyries Get Back in Win Column

DUE WEST, S.C. – With the first goal of her graduate senior campaign, Shelby McCutchen notched the game-winning goal in the Converse University women's soccer team's (4-4-1, 2-1-1 Conference Carolinas) 2-0 victory over the Erskine Flying Fleet (1-6-1, 0-6-1 Conference Carolinas).

Freshman Lily Lyman recorded her second career goal in the victory. Fellow freshman Gabriella Gudeman recorded her third career solo shutout in the goalkeeping box in the 2-0 win.

The Valkyries held the Flying Fleet to no shots at all in the contest due to the strong offensive attack and the defensive efforts of sophomore Ava Forrester, senior Madison Free and junior Savannah Mellon. Converse took 19 shots of their own over the course of the 90 minutes: 11 in the first half and eight in the second.

Despite the large advantage in shots, it wasn't until the 38th minute that the Valkyries found the back of the net. McCutchen, assisted by Mellon, netted the first and only goal of the first half.

As the game neared completion, Lyman netted her second career goal off of an assist from junior Skylar Lund in the 83rd minute.

The Valkyries return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 16 as they host the Belmont Abbey Crusaders for Purple Reign night beginning at 5 P.M.
