Two Second-Half Goals Propel Men’s Soccer Past Mars Hill in Regionally-Ranked Matchup

MARS HILL, N.C. – After an even first half with the regionally-ranked No. 7 Mars Hill Lions (2-1), the No. 5 Converse University men's soccer team (2-0) found the back of the net twice in the final 45 minutes to claim a 3-1 victory.

Converse started the scoring in the 21st minute with an unassisted goal. But the lead did not hold long as two minutes later the Lions evened the score off of an assist from the team's top scorer. That 1-1 tie held until halftime.

Just seven minutes into the second half, junior midfielder Ricky Cardozo connected with fellow junior midfielder Nicholas Gartung to give the Valkyries a 2-1 lead. Just over 30 minutes later, sophomore forward Guilherme Fontes scored an unassisted goal to double Converse's lead.

The Valkyries' defense dominated the Mars Hill offense, forcing many off-target shots by the Lions. Despite outshooting the Valkyries 11-10, Mars Hill recorded just two shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Baerwalde recorded a save on the night and picked up his second win in the box for the Valkyries.

Converse continues the season in Wilson, N.C. as they open up Conference Carolinas play against Barton. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
