FLORENCE, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team went 0-2 this past weekend with straight set losses to both UNC Pembroke and Francis Marion.
With the losses Converse drops to 3-11 overall and 2-4 in Conference Carolinas action. UNC Pembroke is now 10-7 overall and 5-2 in Conference play, while Francis Marion improved to 9-8 overall and 5-1 in conference.
Game One: UNC Pembroke 3, Converse 0
- In the opening set UNC Pembroke recorded 16 team kills and hit .234 for the set and won the first set 25-19.
- The Valkyries recorded a game high 16 kills in the second set but fell late 28-26 to the Braves.
- In the third set, the Valkyries recorded their best hitting percentage of the match with a .343 hitting percentage. UNC Pembroke finished with 19 team kills and took the final set 25-21 to complete the sweep.
- UNCP won the team statistical categories in points, kills, aces, assists and digs. Converse out blocked the Braves 5-1 in the match.
- MacKenzie Schmucker recorded a double-double and led the team in assists (35) and Digs (22). Evelyn Fitz and Alayah Robertson both led the team with 9 kills each, while Tori Barr finished with a team high 4 blocks.
Game Two: Francis Marion 3, Converse 0
- It was a back-and-forth opening set between the two teams, the Valkyries ended the set with 14 team kills and Francis Marion finished with 17 team kills. The Patriot's edged out the Valkyries 25-22 in the first set.
- In the second set Francis Marion hit .281 as a team and took the second set 25-14.
- In the third set, Francis Marion hit .485 with 16 kills against the Valkyries defense and took the final set 25-17.
- Francis Marion won the team statistical categories in points, kills, aces, assists and digs. Converse out blocked the Patriots 3-2 in the match.
- Fitz led the team with nine kills, Tori Barr finished second on the team with eight kills and Ariel Bryant recorded seven kills.
- Schmucker recorded a team high 27 assists, while Mackenzie Day led the team with 15 digs against the Patriots.
Next Up:
- Converse will wrap up their three-game road trip with a short jaunt down I-26 to face Lander on Tuesday night. Opening serve is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start.
