SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team lost 4-0 to #10 Newberry on Saturday morning at Weisiger Stadium.
With the loss, Converse falls to 5-4 overall on the season and 3-3 in South Atlantic Conference action. Newberry improves to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. The loss also snaps a four-game winning streak against the Wolves dating back to the 2021 season.
In the first 15-minutes of the contest the two teams were deadlocked as each team attempted a trio of shots against the others defense. The Valkyries were the more aggressive of the two squads as they attempted four penalty corners in the opening frame.
In the second quarter the Wolves broke through with a pair of goals within 30 seconds of each other. Despite the 2-0 deficit the Valkyries offense remained on the attack as they attempted five more penalty corners. Going into the halftime break the Valkyries trailed 2-0 to Newberry.
In the third quarter the Wolves offense took control of the match and outshot Converse 9-1. Newberry also attempted 7 corners in the period and Emma Westbrook scored a goal to give the Wolves a 3-0 advantage. With the match all but put away in the fourth quarter, Parker Keeler added a late goal to give Newberry the 4-0 win.
Newberry outshot Converse 23-14 overall and 17-7 in shots on goal attempts. Converse made 13 total saves and Newberry made 7 saves. Converse attempted more penalty corners than Newberry 12-11.

The Valkyries will start their second three-game road trip this coming Tuesday with a trip to Lander. Game time is currently scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
