Clover, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team fell 1-0 to Belmont Abbey this afternoon at Field Day Park.
The loss drops the Valkyries overall record to 4-3 and 2-2 in South Atlantic Conference action. Belmont Abbey improves to 1-5 on the year and 1-3 in conference play. This is the third one goal loss by the Valkyries this season.
Converse controlled the game offensively for much of the opening quarter, as they outshot the Crusaders 5-1. However, the Crusaders lone shot from Sarah Shumacher found the back of the net for the opening goal of the contest. For the remainder of the half the Valkyries continued to put offensive pressure on Belmont Abbey but trailed 1-0 going into the halftime intermission.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Valkyries once again went on the offensive and outshot Belmont Abbey 11-1 overall in the second half. Try as they might, the Valkyries could not buy a goal as Belmont Abbey made all nine saves on the Valkyries shot on goal attempts.
Converse outshot Belmont Abbey 20-5 overall and 9-4 in shots on goal during the game. The two teams tied with eight penalty corners each and
Kat Daniels led the Valkyries with three saves in goal.
Next Up:
The Valkyries will end their three-game road trip this coming Tuesday with a trip to Coker. Game time is currently scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
