Late Penalty Kick Spells Defeat for Converse Women’s Soccer

SPARTBURG, S.C. – After tying the game with 10 minutes remaining in the match, a late penalty kick by the King Tornado (2-3-1, 1-1 Conference Carolinas) with under two minutes to play proved costly for the Converse University women's soccer team (1-3-2, 0-2-1 Conference Carolinas). The Valkyries fell 3-2.

Senior defender Brooklyn Galler opened the scoring with her second goal of the season in just the seventh minute. Freshman forward Hannah Liebig recorded her first career assist on the opening goal.

Twelve minutes later, a goal from King drew the game even 1-1. Converse dominated position in the first half, recording 11 shots while only allowing King to take three. Junior goalkeeper Kiersten Schrawyer recorded her lone save of the game in the first half. Despite keeping the King goaltender on her toes all half, the Valkyries had to settle for an even 1-1 score at halftime.

Less than two minutes into the second half, King took their first lead of the game.

That lead held for almost 25 minutes when junior forward Ellie Gore scored an unassisted goal with ten minutes to play. As the teams continued to go back and forth, it began to look as though the game would end the same way the first half had: with a draw. But with just under two minutes remaining in the game, a Converse penalty sent the Tornado to the line for a penalty kick.

That shot went past the outstretched arm of Schrawyer and the Valkyries found themselves down again. The team controlled the ball on the following possession but were unable to find another shot attempt as the Tornado won the game 3-2.

The Valkyries return to the pitch on Saturday Sept. 23 as they take on the North Greenville Crusaders in Tigerville. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
