Valkyries Block Bears Late Rally

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team won their second straight five set match on Tuesday evening, when they defeated Truett McConnell 3-2 inside the Weisiger Center.
 
The Valkyries came out ready to go in the opening set as they recorded 13 kills and hit .294 for the period. In the second set, however, the Bears bounced back with an 11 kill set to tie the match at one set each.
 
In the third set the Valkyries recorded their best hitting performance of the evening, as they hit .303 for the Stanza. The Valkyries offense also recorded 13 kills in the third set as they took a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.
 
Despite recording a team high 16 kills in the fourth set, the Valkyries fell following a late rally by Truett McConnell. In the fifth set the Valkyries fed off the home crowd and came away with a 15-13 win to clinch the match over the Bears.
 
As a team the Valkyries recorded more points (78), kills (59), blocks (14) and digs (112). Evelyn Fitz recorded her second straight double-double with a 17 kill and 24 dig performance against the Bears. Ariel Bryant finished second on the team with 11 kills, while Tia Gripado and Tori Barr each recorded 9 kills to finish tied for third on the team.
 
For the second straight match, MacKenzie Schmucker reset her career high with 49 assists on Tuesday night. Schmucker's 49 assists are the fourth most in program history for a single game and the most since Savannah Ducote had a 50 assist outing against Chowan on March 26, 2021.
 
Mackenzie Day recorded a team high 33 digs, Gripado finished second on the team with 26 digs and Jasmine Hamilton finished fourth on the team with 12 digs in the win.  
 
 
Next Up:
Converse will hit the road tomorrow evening to battle Belmont Abbey at 7:30 p.m. in Belmont, N.C.
