BELMONT, N.C. – For the first time since 2006 the Converse volleyball team is victorious over Belmont Abbey following a 3-1 victory on Wednesday evening inside the Wheeler Center.
The win on Wednesday evening ended a 24-match losing streak that dated back to the 2007 season. To put that into perspective the United States has had four different Presidents in office, Facebook became open to anyone over the age of 13 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was the #1 movie in America.
The Valkyries improve to 3-8 overall and 2-1 in Conference Carolinas action. More importantly however, the Valkyries are now tied for first place in the Northwest Division of the Conference Carolinas standings. Belmont Abbey falls to 1-10 overall and 1-2 in Conference Carolinas play.
First Set: Converse 18, Belmont Abbey 25
- Evelyn Fitz recorded the first kill of the night for either team, following an attack error by Belmont Abbey the Valkyries held an early 2-0 advantage.
- Belmont Abbey then used a 10-4 run to take the lead over Converse and force the Valkyries to take their first timeout of the match trailing 10-6.
- Coming out of the timeout break the Valkyries went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 11. It was a back-and-forth set between the two teams over the next several game points, but Belmont Abbey began to pull away at 18-16.
- Converse called their second timeout of the set trailing 20-16. Belmont Abbey won the next three points out of the timeout break to put the first set out of reach for the Valkyries.
- Converse recorded 10 kills and hit .227 in the opening set, while also recording three total blocks against the Crusaders.
Second Set: Converse 25, Belmont Abbey 16
- Cameron Young recorded the first kill of the second set and gave the Crusaders a 1-0 advantage. Moments later back-to-back kills by Fitz and Ariel Bryant tied the set at two.
- The Valkyries kept up the pressure and forced the Crusaders to call a timeout leading 6-3. Coming out of the timeout break, Ariel Bryant recorded a kill and the Valkyries continued to push forward with their offensive attack.
- Converse then used a 10-8 run against the Crusaders to take a 17-11 lead late in the set. Following a Belmont Abbey timeout, the Valkyries recorded back-to-back points off of the Crusaders miscues.
- A kill by MacKenzie Schmucker and a block by Fitz and Tori Barr helped Converse to a second set win.
- Converse finished the second set hitting .250, recording 11 kills, 3 service aces and a pair of blocks against Belmont Abbey.
Third Set: Converse 25, Belmont Abbey 15
- Belmont Abbey scored the opening point of the third set, but the Valkyries opened on a 5-0 run to snatch the lead back from the Crusaders.
- Holding an 8-6 advantage over Belmont Abbey, a block by Tia Gripado and Tori Barr catapulted a quick run by the Valkyries. Schmucker added a kill, followed by a Jasmine Hamilton service ace and a solo block by Barr forced the Crusaders to call a timeout trailing 12-6.
- Coming out of the timeout break the Valkyries committed a service error and then allowed the Crusaders to pick up a quick service ace. However, it did not phase the Valkyries as they won the next three points and forced Belmont Abbey to use their final timeout of the stanza.
- The Valkyries took advantage of the Crusaders self-inflicting mistakes and won the third set with ease over the Crusaders.
- Converse finished the third set with a .190 hitting percentage, eight kills, two aces and four total blocks.
Fourth Set: Converse 25, Belmont Abbey 16
- Converse started the fourth set on a 4-1 run, behind a trio of kills of Fitz and Ariel Bryant.
- Holding a 9-7 advantage over the Crusaders, the Valkyries used a quick 4-0 spurt bookended by kills from Bar and Fitz to increase their lead to 13. Two points later, Converse took a 14-8 advantage and forced Belmont Abbey to use their first timeout of the set.
- The timeout worked to the Crusaders advantage as they went on a 3-0 run to close the gap against the Valkyries. Belmont Abbey began to close in on the Valkyries set lead at 16-13 But Fitz once again slammed the door on the Crusaders attack.
- Trailing 18-13 Belmont Abbey once again called timeout to try and regroup against the Valkyries. However, the Valkyries ended the match on a 7-3 run and took the final set 25-16.
- The Valkyries saved their best for last, as they hit .276 with 12 kills and four total blocks against the Crusaders.
