Converse Volleyball Wins Thriller Over Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – The Converse University volleyball team went 1-1 to start Conference Carolinas action this weekend with the programs first ever win against Emmanuel on Saturday afternoon.   
 
Game One: Young Harris 3, Converse 1
  • In the opening Conference Carolinas match of the season, the Valkyries came out swinging as they took the opening set 25-21.
  • Converse recorded 11 kills and hit a team high .294 in the first set of the match.
  • In the 2nd set the Valkyries had their most team kills for the match with 12, but they only hit .160 for the set.
  • The Valkyries ended up dropping both the second and third sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-21.
  • Young Harris finished with a .256 hitting percentage in the third set and a .297 hitting percentage in the fourth set. The Mountain Lions won the final two sets with scores of 25-21 and 25-16.
  • Young Harris won the team statistical categories of points, kills, aces, blocks, assists and digs.
  • Megan Carpenter led the Valkyries with 10 kills, Evelyn Fitz finished second on the team with 8 kills and Tori Barr rounded out the top three with 6 kills.
  • MacKenzie Schmucker led the team with 17 assists, Madison Gregory finished second on the team with 9 assists. Mackenzie Day led the team with 18 digs and Gregory finished second with 9 digs.
 
Game Two: Converse 3, Emmanuel 2
  • For the first time in program history the Valkyries defeated Emmanuel, ending a 17-game winning streak for the Lions in the series.
  • The win also concluded an eight-game losing streak for the Valkyries to start the season.
  • Emmanuel won the opening set 25-19 and hit .227 with 16 team kills, this was also the worst set of the match for the Valkyries.
  • In the second set the Valkyries offense roared back to life as they took the stanza 25-23.
  • In the third set the two teams went back-and-forth throughout the period as Emmanuel barley edged the Valkyries out with a 29-27 win.
  • In the fourth set it was the Valkyries that won the extra volleyball in the period as they took down Emmanuel 27-25.
  • In the fifth and final set the Valkyries had their best offensive showing of the match, as they out hit the Lions with a .286 hitting percentage.
  • Evelyn Fitz, Tia Gripado and MacKenzie Schmucker all finished with double-doubles in the match. Fitz finished with a team high 17 kills and 10 digs, while Gripado finished second on the team with 12 kills and 13 digs. Schmucker finished with a career high 35 assists and 21 digs.
  • Fitz also had a team high 5 aces, while both Gripado and Alayah Robertson each had four blocks in the match.
  • Mackenzie Day finished second on the team in digs with 19 and Jasmine Hamilton finished third on the team with 18 digs.
 
 
Next Up:
  • Converse will host their first home game of the season on Tuesday night when they face Truett McConnell at 7:00 p.m. inside the Weisiger Center.
