SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team scored two goals late in the fourth quarter to take a 3-1 win over Lander University on Tuesday night at Weisiger Stadium.
 
With the win Converse improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Lander drops to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in South Atlantic Conference. Converse also improves to 4-0 all-time against Lander and this is their third multi-goal win over Lander in the series.
 
The two squads were evenly matched at the start of the first quarter, as each team took turns testing the others defense. Late in the period Mollie McGann scored the first goal of the game for Lander. The Bearcats held onto the lead going into the second quarter of play.
 
Just five minutes into the second quarter, Brooklyn Widdess found Leonoor de Vreugd for the equalizer off a corner opportunity for the Valkyries. The two squads went into the halftime intermission tied at one.
 
Following a stalemate in the third quarter between the two teams the Valkyries came out ready to go in the fourth quarter. Josephine Esterhues found Emily Whitlow for the go-ahead goal for Converse just one minute into the final stanza. Four minutes later, Widdess found Whitlow for her second goal of the evening and Converse held a two-goal advantage.
 
The two teams were fairly even through out the night, as each team attempted 8 shots and 4 shots on goal.
