Valkyries Left Heartbroken by Emmanuel

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With 12 seconds to go in the game, the Valkyries had their backs against the wall in a woman down situation against Emmanuel. Following a timeout, the Lions converted on a last second goal and sunk the Valkyries hopes with a 15-14 win at Weisiger Stadium.

With the loss the Valkyries two match winning streak comes to a close and they fall to 7-6 overall on the season and 3-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Meanwhile, Emmanuel improves to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in Conference Carolinas action.

Converse opened up the game with three consecutive goals by Hailey Obenchain and Karter Lauer. Emmanuel scored their first goal of the game from Justine Dorelas with 35 seconds to go in the period. Moments later, Ryleigh Schaeffer scored her first goal for Converse with 10 second remaining in the first stanza. The Valkyries held a 4-1 advantage after the first period of action was complete.

In the second quarter the Lions offense awoke from their slumber and scored four goals in four minutes to take a 5-4 lead over the Valkyries. Brenna Everette and Schaeffer countered with goals of their own to give the Valkyries the lead once again at 6-5. Throughout the remainder of the period, the two teams traded goals and went into the halftime break tied at eight.

Following the halftime intermission, the two teams each scored a trio of goals in the third quarter to keep the score locked in a stalemate at 11. At the start of the fourth quarter, it appeared that the Valkyries had the momentum with a pair of goals from Gencie Coan and Schaeffer in the early minutes of the period. With 9:25 remaining in the game, Everette scored to give the Valkyries a 14-12 advantage. The Lions defense held the Valkyries offense scoreless in the final 9:25 of the game as they ended the contest on a 3-0 scoring run.
