SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's tennis team defeated North Greenville University 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Converse University tennis courts.
With the win Converse snaps a five-game losing skid and improves to 3-7 overall on the season and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play this season. The win also gives the Valkyries their third straight win over North Greenville dating back to last season. North Greenville falls to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in Conference Carolinas action this season.
In doubles action, the Valkyries No. 3 doubles team of
Leopold Morel and
Marty Letessier gave the Valkyries the early advantage with a 6-2 win at their respective flight. The Crusaders tied the doubles point up with a win at the No. 2 doubles court. At the No. 1 doubles flight, the Valkyries top tandem of
Merlin Bellet/
Enzo Marcheschi captured the doubles point with a 7-5 win over the Crusaders top pairing.
Bellet kept up the pressure with a straight set win at the No.1 singles court to give Converse an early 2-0 lead. Marcheschi settled down after dropping his first set at the No. 3 singles court and rallied to win a third set tiebreak to give Converse a 3-0 lead. North Greenville got on the board at the No. 5 singles court following a three-set loss by
Marty Letessier.
Leopold Morel clinched the match for Converse with a straight sets win at the No. 6 singles court. The win also gave Morel his seventh win of the season and he improved to 6-0 at the No. 6 flight.
Paul Berrouet gave the Valkyries a little extra insurance with a win at the No. 4 singles court and
Gregoire Legrand lost at the No. 2 singles flight to give North Greenville their second point of the match.
Converse will have a week off before they travel over to Greenville, S.C., next Saturday to take on the Furman Paladins.
