SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's tennis team lost 7-0 to Wofford College on Sunday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
With the loss on Sunday afternoon the Valkyries drop to 1-2 overall on the season, while Wofford improves to 1-4 on the year. This was the first ever win for Wofford in the all-time series as the Valkyries had won the previous four meetings back in the late 1980s.
In doubles action the Terriers jumped out to a fast start as they defeated the Valkyries No. 3 tandem 6-0. Converse was unable to generate momentum on the other two courts as the Valkyries top two tandems fell 6-1 and 6-2.
The singles portion of the match was just as difficult for the Valkyries against Wofford.
Marleen Prinz was the first causality losing in straight sets at the No. 3 singles court. Freshman
Sofia Giaraldo-Jimenez fell shortly after in straight sets to give Wofford a 3-0 advantage.
At the No. 1 and No. 2 singles flights the Valkyries top players of
Tonya Glogowski-Watson and
Khushi Kharb put up a respectable fight but both fell 6-2, 6-3. At the No. 6 tennis court
Luiza Estrada fell 6-0, 6-4 and Wofford completed the sweep after the
Lais Martins fell at the No. 4 singles flight. Martins was the closest Valkyries to taking a set off the Terriers all-day as she dropped the second set 7-5.
The Valkyries will have a quick turnaround this week as they travel to Gardner-Webb on Tuesday afternoon. For all the latest news on the Converse tennis team log onto
