Kharb Takes Down Regionally Ranked Opponent in Season Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's tennis team lost their home opener 6-1 to Anderson University on Friday afternoon at the Converse University Tennis Courts.

In the doubles portion of the match, Anderson got out to a quick lead, winning on both the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts. The Valkyries No. 2 doubles tandem of Lais Martins and Marleen Prinz pushed the Trojans to the brink but fell in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5).

Moving into the singles section of the match, Laurel Maynor lost to the 15th ranked regional player and the Trojans took a 2-0 advantage. Freshman Khushi Kharb knocked off No. 18 Anna Greer (6-1, 6-2) in just a little over an hour at the No. 2 singles court. The win by Kharb kept the Valkyries in the hunt as they trailed 2-1 with four courts left to be played.

At the No. 1 singles flight, Tonya Glogowski-Watson battled hard in the opening set but came up short after losing the first set tiebreak 7-4. In the second set the wind started to play a factor for both teams but Glogowski-Watson came up short in the second to give Anderson a 3-1 advantage. Two courts over from Glogowski-Watson, junior Marleen Prinz was in a three-set battle of her own. Prinz lost the opening set 6-2 but tied the match at one set all after a 6-4 win in the second. In the final set the momentum shifted in Anderson's favor once again and the Trojans clinched the match at 4-1.

On court No. 6 Sofia Giaraldo-Jimenez fell to Megan Pleasant in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. On the last court of the evening Lais Martins battled Valentina Borda for every point. In the opening set, Martins lost in a tiebreak 7-3 but dropped the final set 6-2 to give Anderson a 6-1 win over the Valkyries.
