Valkyries Stumble Against Saints

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –  The Converse University men's basketball team fell 81-75 to Limestone on Saturday afternoon inside the Weisiger Center.  

With the loss Converse drops to 9-2 overall on the season, suffering both their first home loss and non-conference loss in the process. Limestone, meanwhile improves to 6-6 on the year and improve to 3-1 against Conference Carolinas school's this season.  

Kervens Yacinthe led the team in scoring with 19-points off the bench, Uzziah Dawkins was second on the team with 17-points and CJ Jamison had 13-points in the loss. Jamison led the team with 6 rebounds, while Malcolm Morgan had a team high 3 assists.

First Half Notes:
  • Limestone won the opening tip-off but both teams missed their first shots of the game. Jacquez Yow scored the first points of the game at the free throw line for Limestone and scored the opening field goal with a dunk moments later.
  • Malcolm Morgan found Leonardo Da Campo for the first points of the game for Converse at the 18:37 mark of the period.
  • C.J. Jamison tied the game up at 4 with a midrange jumper at the 17:31 mark of the half. However, by the first media timeout the Saints had built a 9-4 advantage following a 5-0 offensive spurt.
  • Kervens Yacinthe came off the bench for the second straight game to try and rejuvenate the Valkyries offense. Yacinthe knocked down a crucial three-pointer at the 13:13 junction in the period and Converse trailed 12-9.
  • Over two minutes of game action went by before Morgan and Yacinthe hit back-to-back three's on offensive possessions to give Converse a 15-14 lead.
  • With 5:07 to play in the half, Uzziah Dawkins connected on a three-point attempt to give Converse a 26-21 advantage. Less than a minute later, Da Campo scored to make it a seven point game.
  • Isac Ahnstrand scored the final points of the half to give Converse a 35-34 advantage going into the intermission break.
  • Converse shot 43 percent in the first half, 40 percent from three-point range and 83 percent from the free throw line.  
Second Half Notes:
  • Coming out of the halftime break, Converse started the period on an 11-0 run and forced Limestone to call and early timeout.
  • Despite the early lead, the Saints hung around and dwindled the Valkyries advantage. With 11:44 to play in the game, the two teams were deadlocked at 51.
  • Jamison and Joel Pullen countered with a quick 5-0 spurts to give the Valkyries the advantage once more. However, the Saints once again rallied and tied the game at 64 with 6:23 to play in the match.
  • Converse never regained the lead as Limestone finished the game on a 15-9 run. The Saints win snapped a six game home winning streak for the Valkyries.
  • In the second half, Converse shot 42 percent from the field, 25 percent from three-point range and 100 percent from the free throw line.

Next Up:
The men's basketball team will be back in action this coming Tuesday at Livingstone College. Tipoff is for a 7:00 p.m. start in Salisbury, N.C.
