Men’s Soccer Downs Southern Wesleyan 5-2

CENTRAL, S.C. – Propelled by a three-goal second half, the Converse University men's soccer team (9-4-3,  7-2-3 Conference Carolinas) defeated the Southern Wesleyan Warriors (5-12-1, 2-10 Conference Carolinas) 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Converse doubled up the Warriors in shots taken, 22-11, but only had a slight edge in shots on goal 10-7. Playing in half of the game, sophomore goalkeeper Tim Baerwalde recorded four saves.

Junior defender Gabriel Verona got the scoring going early with a penalty kick goal in the ninth minute and junior forward Johannes Haden doubled the Valkyries lead with a goal in the 18th minute. After conceding a goal later in the first half, the Valkyries entered the break up 2-1.

Junior forward Joel Houston got Converse back on track with a goal just under four minutes into the second half. Verona netted another penalty kick in the 77th minute and Houston notched his second goal of the evening in the 83rd minute.

With the regular season complete, the Valkyries look ahead to the Conference Carolinas tournament where they will likely host a first-round or quarterfinal game next week.
