SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the first time in four seasons the Converse University field hockey team went the distance and lost 3-2 in a shootout to Belmont Abbey on Tuesday evening.
With the loss the Valkyries drop to 6-8 overall and 4-7 in South Atlantic Conference action, while the Crusaders improve to 5-8 overall and 5-6 in SAC play.
Belmont Abbey kicked off the scoring in the contest as Abigail Kane found Casey Etter for the first goal of the match. In the second quarter of action
Caroline Blair found junior forward
Emily Whitlow for the game tying goal for Converse. The two teams went into the halftime intermission knotted at one goal each.
In the third quarter
Brooklyn Widdess started a corner attempt by passing to
Nina Buyst. The freshman then found
Catalina Pistaccio for the go-ahead goal for the Valkyries. The Valkyries lead was short lived as Jillian Cain found Jessica Rybicki for the equalizer in the 37
th minute. The two teams finished regulation tied at two.
After a pair of scoreless overtime periods, Converse and Belmont Abbey advanced to the shootout stage of the contest knotted at two. Lainey Rogers missed the first attempt for Belmont Abbey, Pistaccio followed suite with a miss of her own for the Valkyries. Abigail Kane made the second attempt for Belmont Abbey, while
Brooklyn Widdess missed her attempt for Converse. The two teams failed to make another shootout attempt on either side, resulting in a 3-2 win for Belmont Abbey.
Converse will be back at home this weekend when they host Coker for Senior Night. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. at Weisiger Stadium.
