Valkyries Vault Past Bulldogs in Overtime

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team defeated Wingate 4-3 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.
 
With the win the Valkyries snap a four-match losing streak and a three-match losing streak in overtime contests. Converse improves to 6-7 overall and 4-6 in South Atlantic Conference action. Meanwhile, Wingate drops to 3-10 overall and 3-8 in South Atlantic Conference play.
 
Wingate started the scoring for either side with a goal from Novy Schrijvers just 30 seconds into the contest. The Valkyries offense attempted to respond with five shots in the period and attempted five penalty corners. The Wingate goalie stood strong, however, as the Bulldogs recorded four saves in the period to take the lead into the second quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Chelsy Bunse passed ahead to Catalina Pistaccio who found Emily Whitlow for the game tying goal. The two teams went into the halftime break knotted at one. In the opening half, Converse outshot Wingate 12-4 and attempted six penalty corners in the half.
 
Following a scoreless third quarter, Schrijvers scored the go-ahead goal for Wingate just five minutes into the fourth quarter. Moments later, Kilee Bradeen found Caroline Blair for the Valkyries second goal of the match. Less than three minutes later, Pistaccio gave Converse their first outright lead of the game.
 
With just a minute and a half left of game time, Lauren Montgomery tied the game for Wingate and sent the match into overtime. With just over a minute remaining in the overtime period, Nina Buyst found Brooklyn Widdess for the game-winner.
 
The Valkyries ended the match with four different goal scorers and four different players with assists in the match. Alina Puentes picked up the win in goal and made a trio of saves for the Valkyries.
 
Next Up:
The Valkyries will stay at home this week and battle Belmont Abbey on Tuesday evening. The Valkyries have designated the match as a Pink Out Game, with the match starting at 7:00 p.m.
