MURFREESBORO, N.C. – In a Conference Carolinas road game, the Converse Valkyries women's basketball team visited the Chowan Hawks on Saturday afternoon where they were unsuccessful in their attempt, dropping the road contest 68-41 to the Hawks. The Valkyries fall to 1-13 overall and 1-7 in conference action while the Hawks fly to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
Chowan got off to a hot start, outshooting Converse 22-10 in the first quarter. The Valkyries first points were put on the board four minutes into the game with a layup from
Sydney Wilson followed by a three-point shot from
Zahra Cross.
Maegan Barkley contributed three points to Converse's score and Cross added two more points to her name while the Valkyries went into the second quarter down 12 points.
Wilson worked early in the second quarter to bring the Chowan lead down to 10 points before Keibra Hopkins had a fast break layup to bring the Chowan lead right back up to 12 points. After a dominating quarter and just over a minute remaining in the first half, a jumper from Chowan's Imani Hickman would give the team a 21-point lead.
Mary-Grace Durham cut into the deficit for the Valkyries with a buzzer beater layup to make it 39-20 in the Hawks favor going into halftime.
Converse and Chowan each scored 11 points in the third quarter, however, Converse would fall short in the fourth quarter by only scoring 10 points compared to Chowan's 18 points. Freshman
Laura Jarrett and Wilson each contributed four points in the third quarter while Wilson had six points in the fourth quarter followed by Cross who had four points.
Wilson led the Valkyries overall with 13 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals. Cross followed with 11 points, two rebounds, four assists and two steals. Barkley recorded three steals and
Amaia Parkins had seven rebounds.

Converse will host Lees-McRae on Tuesday, January 10. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
