Women’s Basketball Rallies Against the Bobcats to Secure Conference Carolinas Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse women's basketball team picked up a 60-48 win over Lees-McRae on Wednesday evening inside the Weisiger Center. The win pushes the Valkyries to 2-13 overall and 2-7 in Conference Carolinas play while the Bobcats fall to 1-13 overall and 0-9 in Conference Carolinas action.

Converse got off to a quick 4-0 start with back-to-back jumpers from Jordan Brown and Sydney Wilson. The Bobcats answered with their own jumper before Converse would gain a five-point lead. Maegan Barkley then entered the game, immediately contributing points to the Valkyries lead. Converse and Lees-McRae would continue to exchange points throughout the quarter, however, the Bobcats would not be able to overcome Converse's 19-12 lead.

A nine-point lead was captured for the Valkyries to start out the second quarter. The Bobcats then went on a 10-point run to gain the lead. Converse answered with their own run, this time scoring 12 unanswered points to make it a 33-22 game in their favor with just over a minute left in the first half of play. A pair of free throws by Zahra Cross would send the Valkyries into the locker room with a 35-23 lead.

Lees-McRae came out of the halftime break looking for redemption, ultimately outscoring Converse 16-11 in the third quarter. The Valkyries 15-point lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the quarter would be shattered as Lees-McRae scored 14 unanswered points in four minutes. Converse rebounded though, extending their lead to seven points as they headed into the final quarter of play.

Starting off the final quarter of play up 46-39, the Valkyries wasted no time as they scored two quick points. After Jessica Henderson's layup with three minutes left, no more Bobcat points would be added to the scoreboard. Cross would score the final two points of the game as Converse came out victorious by a final score of 60-48.
