PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 78-63 to #14 UNC Pembroke on Wednesday night at the Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
Converse is now 6-9 overall and 4-3 in Conference Carolinas action this season. The Valkyries are now 0-8 in games played away from the Weisiger Center this season. On a more positive note, the Valkyries set a new school record for free throws attempted with 35 tonight against UNC Pembroke. For the second straight match
Bosko Bojovic recorded a double-double with a 15-point, 13-rebound performance.
Uzziah Dawkins led the Valkyries with 17-points on the night, while
Earl Burgess III contributed 11-points.
First Half Notes:
- Elijah Pitts scored the first points of the game with 18:37 to play in the opening period. Cortez Marion Holmes countered for the Braves on their next possession.
- A few moments later, Uzziah Dawkins and Bosko Bojovic made back-to-back baskets and the Valkyries led 11-6.
- Converse continued to hold onto their slim lead until the 11:09 mark of the period when Nygell Verdier tied the game at 17 for UNC Pembroke.
- Over the next few minutes of game time the two teams slugged it out in the paint for a few hard-earned buckets. With 6:05 to play Jordan Warlick attempted the Valkyries first three-pointer of the period.
- Jay Mitchell hit the first three-pointer for the Valkyries with 5:55 to play and the Valkyries took a 27-26 lead over the Braves.
- The lead was short lived, however, as UNC Pembroke finished the half on a 15-6 run.
- Converse shot 48 percent in the opening half, 33 percent from three-point range and 66 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
- Jajuan Carr scored the first basket of the second half for either side with 19:43 to play in the period.
- Dawkins scored on back-to-back possessions for the Valkyries to pull Converse back with single digits at 43-37.
- A few moments later, Elijah Cobb found Javonte Waverly for a fastbreak dunk that capped an 11-1 run for the Braves.
- Nygel Boozer knocked down a three-pointer to end the run as the Valkyries looked to claw their way back into the game against the Braves.
- Despite making it to the free throw line 23 times in the second half, the Valkyries were unable to overcome the Braves double-digit lead.
- In the second half the Valkyries shot 30 percent from the field, 12.50 percent from three-point range and 73.91 percent from the free throw line.
