Porcil Comes Off the Bench to Score a Season High Against Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The road woes continue for the Converse University men's basketball team as they dropped an 83-74 decision to Chowan on Saturday afternoon inside the Hawks Athletic Center.

Converse is now 6-10 overall this season and 4-4 in Conference Carolinas action this season. While the Valkyries are 6-1 inside the Weisiger Center this season, they are now 0-8 in road games this year. Bosko Bojovic registered his third straight double-double with a 17-point, 15-rebound effort against the Hawks.

Aaron Porcil scored 16-points off the bench, Uzziah Dawkins registered 13-points and Trey Smith finished with 11-points. Dawkins led the team with three assists while the team combined for three blocks and three steals in the contest.

First Half Notes:
  • Jay Estime scored the first points of the game with a three-pointer on the Hawks opening possession. NyGel Boozer scored the first points for Converse with a layup at the 18:46 mark.
  • It was a tough defensive battle in the opening moments of the first half as both teams went on scoring draughts in the early moments of the period. Paul Whitby hit a three-pointer for Chowan to give the Hawks an 8-7 lead with 14:00 to play.
  • Converse lost the momentum after the three-pointer and surrendered a 10-2 run to the Hawks over the next three minutes of game time.
  • Earl Burgess III made a layup with 9:24 to play and triggered an 8-0 Converse run. Trailing 24-21 the Valkyries looked to have the momentum back on their side.
  • A few minutes later Bojovic and Porcil made back-to-back layups and the Valkyries held a 25-24 edge over the Hawks.
  • For the remainder of the half the two teams traded baskets and Converse trailed going into the halftime break 32-31.
  • Converse shot 36 percent from the field in the opening half, 30 percent from three-point range and 57 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
  • Bojovic scored the first four points of the second half for Converse and the Valkyries held a 35-32 lead over the Hawks.
  • The Valkyries offense then fell quiet over the next three minutes of game time as the Hawks chipped away at their lead. A fastbreak score by Skyler Davies capped off a 6-0 run by Converse as they regained the lead over Converse.
  • For the next 10 minutes of game time the two teams went back-and-forth down the court with each team trading baskets and momentum.
  • With 5:27 to play Burgess III made a layup and the Valkyries were back within a pair of points at 60-58. It was the closest the Valkyries would get the rest of the game as Chowan took the momentum and hit there free throws down the stretch to take the win.
  • The Valkyries were outscored 51-43 in the second half, they shot 51 percent from the field, 28 percent from three-point range and 50 percent from the free throw line.

Next Up:
Converse will be back at home this Tuesday night against the Lees-McRae Bobcats. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. inside the Weisiger Center.
