Valkyries Give Crusaders a Run for Their Money

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's basketball team dropped a home game to undefeated Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon inside the Weisiger Center. The 58-41 loss moves the Valkyries to 4-17 overall and 4-10 in Conference Carolinas action while the Crusaders move up to 16-3 overall and 13-0 in Conference Carolinas play.
 
Belmont Abbey got off to an early 5-0 lead before Jordan Brown got the Valkyries on the board with two points. Converse would get within one point of the Abbey's lead with a three-pointer with 2:43 on the clock. A last second layup from the Crusaders would send them into the second quarter with the 16-11 lead.
 
The Crusaders opened up the second quarter by advancing their lead to nine points. It would take just under two minutes for the Valkyries to answer as Sydney Wilson floated one in. A jumper and a free throw from Zahra Cross would push Converse to just three points behind Belmont Abbey. The Crusaders worked hard to outshoot the Valkyries, but the purple and gold outshot them 15-13. Belmont Abbey did head into the locker room, though, with the 29-26 advantage.
 
Wilson started the second half with a layup making it a 29-28 game. Taylor Stelley answered for Belmont Abbey with a jumper followed by Amaia Parkins putting two points up for the Valkyries. Converse would go into the fourth quarter down 40-36.
 
Belmont Abbey secured the 58-41 win in the final quarter by holding the Valkyries to just five points while they scored 18 points. Four of the Converse points came from Wilson while Brown sank one with a good free throw.
 
Brown and Cross led Converse with 11 points each. Brown recorded five rebounds, one assist and one steal while Cross had one rebound, one assist and one steal. Wilson followed with 10 points, seven rebounds, one assist and two blocks. Parkins also recorded seven rebounds for the Valkyries.

Converse will head to North Greenville on Wednesday, February 1 for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off game.
