Valkyries Send King Home to Bristol with Fifth Straight Tornado Loss

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's basketball team picked up a big conference win on Tuesday evening with a 64-52 win over the King Tornado. The win moves Converse to 4-16 overall and 4-9 in Conference Carolinas action while King falls to 4-15 overall and 4-7 in Conference Carolinas play.
 
Sydney Wilson got Converse on the board first with two points followed by King who answered with two points. Wilson gave the Valkyries a four-point lead with 6:39 on the clock. The Tornado worked to gain a lead at 8-6 but a three-pointer by Alisa Davenport allowed the Valkyries to have a 13-8 advantage with 48 seconds left in the first quarter. Jaden Potts from King sank a three followed by Jordan Brown with a deep buzzer-beating three to make it 16-11 Converse going into the second quarter.
 
The second quarter was slow moving as there were four minutes to open up the quarter without a single basket going in for either Converse or King. Brown managed to get a layup to go for the Valkyries with 5:32 on the board. Potts followed with a three-pointer for King, their only basket of the quarter. Converse got up to a 13-point lead to go into halftime with the 27-14 advantage.
 
King started out the second half with a three-pointer to make it 27-17. Points would then be exchanged between the two teams until Converse scored seven answered to contain their lead going into the final quarter.
 
The Tornado attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Valkyries 23-17. King got the Valkyrie lead down to 12 points two times throughout the quarter, once with 1:57 left on the clock and shortly after with 1:15 left. The layup from King's Mykeria Johnson at 1:15 would be the last points scored in the game, giving Converse their fourth win of the season at 64-52.
 
Wilson led the Valkyries with a double-double. She recorded 22 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal. Zahra Cross followed with 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and five steals while Brown had 14 points, three rebounds, one assist, two blocks and two steals.
 
Next Up:
The Valkyries will remain at home, hosting Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
