Brown and Wilson Finish with Double-Doubles in Win over Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Converse women's basketball team picked up their third win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating Southern Wesleyan 62-56. The Valkyries are now 3-15 overall and 3-8 in Conference Carolinas play while the Warriors fall to 2-17 overall and 2-9 in Conference Carolinas play.
 
Converse got an early 4-0 lead as Sydney Wilson and Jordan Brown each put a layup in for the Valkyries. Southern Wesleyan's shots kept going in, so much so that it was a one-point game with 3:01 left in the first quarter. They eventually gained the lead as Lexi Greffen was able to put a fast break layup in. Working together, Brown and Daven West were each able to score two points to put Converse up 13-10 going into the second quarter.
 
Shots were evenly matched throughout the second quarter with Converse scoring 12 points while Southern Wesleyan scored 13 points, however, the Warriors were never able to secure a lead in the 10 minutes. Wilson, Brown and Zahra Cross each scored four points, making it a 25-23 game in Converse's favor going into halftime.
 
The Valkyries put in the work coming out of the locker room, putting up a total of 22 points in the third quarter. The Warriors were able to make it a tied game at 31 points with 6:06 left on the clock. The Valkyries answered with nine unanswered points before Southern Wesleyan was able to stop the shooting clinic with a free throw. Points would then be exchanged between the two teams, but Colbie Perry's last second made free throw would send Converse into the fourth quarter up 47-36.
 
Southern Wesleyan attempted a comeback in the final quarter, outshooting Converse 20-15. With 30 seconds left, the Warriors were able to make it a two-possession game but it would prove to be too little too late as Cross sunk a set of free throws to put the Valkyries up by seven points. Brooke Henricks scored the last points for the Warriors while Wilson put up free throws for Converse with two seconds left in the game. The Valkyries would come out victorious 62-56.
 
Cross led Converse in points with 17 on the night while tallying two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Brown had 15 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and one steal and Wilson had 14 points, 14 rebounds, one assist, six blocks and one steal while Amaia Parkins racked up 13 rebounds.

Converse will return home on Saturday afternoon to host Barton College at 2:00 p.m.
