MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Converse women's basketball team dropped a road contest to Mount Olive on Monday afternoon. The 66-44 loss drops the Valkyries to 2-15 overall and 2-8 in Conference Carolinas action while the Trojans climb to 10-9 overall and 6-4 in Conference Carolinas play.
Converse got on the board first, scoring back-to-back layups from
Sydney Wilson and
Jordan Brown before Mount Olive got two points on the board from Haleigh Crews. Wilson would score another two points before a three-pointer was shot by the Trojans to bring them within one point of the Valkyries lead. Mount Olive then went on a 10-2 run with Wilson scoring a buzzer-beating layup to end the first quarter of play.
Converse struggled in the second quarter, only putting up five points before halftime. With just under four minutes left to play in the quarter, a
Zahra Cross three-pointer would make it a 27-11 game in Mount Olive's favor. The Valkyries' other two points came from a set of free throws shot by
Demya Chisholm.
Colbie Perry and Wilson started out the third quarter with layups to bring Converse within 15 points of Mount Olive. The Trojans would get a 26-point lead on the Valkyries with 37 seconds remaining in the quarter. Cross brought the lead down to 23 points as her three ball with seven seconds remaining went in.
The Valkyries fought hard to suppress the Trojan lead in the final quarter of play, ultimately outshooting Mount Olive 17-16.
Mary-Grace Durham got on the board for Converse with a layup in the paint with 9:37 on the clock. Cross followed with a jumper to make the score 50-31, still in Mount Olive's favor. The Trojan's were able to get a 26-point lead, once again, with 1:28 remaining in the game. Cross ended the game with a made free throw and a three-point for Converse to make the final score 66-44.
Cross led Converse with 18 points, four rebounds, one assist, one block and three steals. Brown followed with eight points, four rebounds and two assists. Wilson and
Amaia Parkins each tallied nine rebounds on the afternoon.

The Valkyries will travel to Central, S.C. on Wednesday, January 18 for a game at Southern Wesleyan.
