A Pair of Double-Doubles Power Converse Past Fayetteville State

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team knocked off Fayetteville State 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-17, 25-18) on Saturday morning at the Smith University Center on the campus of Francis Marion University.

For the first time since the spring of 2021 the Valkyries volleyball team has won three straight matches. Converse (4-5, 1-0 CC) hit .207 for the match and .281 in the final two sets, once again the Valkyries offense produced at least three sets of double-digit kills against Fayetteville State.

Through the first 14 points of the opening set the two squads were dead even at seven all. A three-point burst by the Valkyries offense gave Converse the early advantage at 10-7. The two teams continued to play close and Fayetteville State used a five-point run to take a late 23-20 lead over the Valkyries. Converse stepped up and responded with a 6-1 run to close out the set to win 26-24.

In the second set Converse fell behind 5-1 before roaring back to tie the match at five. Midway through the period the Broncos used a 6-0 spurt to take a commanding 17-13 advantage. The Valkyries rally in the second set came up short at 25-20.

During the third period the Valkyries held the momentum early in the set with an 8-2 run over the Broncos. Converse kept up the pressure and took care of Fayetteville State late in the set to take a two-set lead in the match.

In the fourth set the two teams remained evenly matched throughout period. A four-kill spurt by Evelyn Fitz (Columbia, S.C.) gave the Valkyries the momentum they needed to close out the match.

Jasmine Finkley (Blythewood, S.C.) led the Valkyries with a 14-kill performance, Fitz recorded her second double-double in as many days with 13-kills and 11 digs. Savannah Ducote (Lexington, S.C.) produced her second double-double of the week with a 23 assist and 10 dig performance against the Broncos. Mackenzie Day (Columbia, S.C.) once again led the Valkyries with a 15-dig performance and Anna Rabon (Little River, S.C.) ended with a 6 kill, 12 dig performance.
