Valkyries Falter Against Crusaders

 
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse softball team dropped a pair of Conference Carolinas games to the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on Wednesday evening.
 
Game 1 Final: Belmont Abbey 12-1 Converse
Game 2 Final: Belmont Abbey 16-3 Converse
Records: Converse (1-37, 0-14 Conference Carolinas), Belmont Abbey (20-9, 7-5 Conference Carolinas)
 
Game 1 Notes:
  • Top 2 – Belmont Abbey took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the inning.
  • Top 4 – No runs would be scored in the third inning, however, the Crusaders put up nine runs in the top of the fourth to make it a 11-0 game in their favor.
  • Bottom 4 – Maggie Griffis walked during her at-bat and would advance to second as Daija Irizarry grounded out to third off of a sacrifice bunt. Faith Hauser reached first base on an error by Belmont Abbey's first baseman which allowed for Griffis to score the solo run for the Valkyries during game one.
  • Top 5 – The Crusaders were able to score one more run to take game one 12-1.
  • Griffis pitched three innings, and Irizarry pitched two innings.
Game 2 Notes:
  • Top 3 – Taking the early lead once again, the Crusaders put up four runs in the first inning, nine runs in the second inning, and one run in the third inning to have a lead of 14-0.
  • Bottom 3 – In an attempt to make a comeback, the Valkyries put up three runs of their own. It started when Brooklyn McElrath singled to center field followed by Ryan Finazzo who walked. Grace McKinney then doubled down the left field line to advance Finazzo to third and McElrath home. Hauser then grounded out to the shortstop, but it moved McKinney to third and Finazzo was able to put another run up on the board for Converse. Finally, Emily Ingle doubled to send McKinney home to score the third and final run of game two for the Valkyries.
  • Top 4 – Belmont Abbey was able to put two more runs on the board to finish the game with a score of 16-3.
  • Ingle pitched four innings with five strikeouts while Griffis pitched 0.2 innings and Irizarry pitched 0.1 innings.
