SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's and women's tennis teams defeated North Greenville University 6-1 and 4-3 respectively on Saturday afternoon at the Converse University tennis courts.
The women's team improves to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries are now 3-1 at home this season with their lone blemish coming against Lander earlier in the season. Converse got off to a bit of a slow start as they lost the doubles point to North Greenville to open up the match. The Valkyries No. 2 tandem of
Marleen Prinz and
Maria Belen Vendrell won their match 6-1 to finish 2-0 on the weekend.
In singles action the Valkyries battled back, as
Tonya Glogowski-Watson won in straight sets at the No. 2 court to even the match at 1-1. Prinz and
Luiza Estrada each picked up wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 courts to give the Valkyries a 3-1 advantage. At the No. 1 singles flight Vendrell dropped a hard fought three-set match against Larissa Berger.
Valentina Aparicio clinched the match for the Valkyries, however, with a 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 singles court.
Brooke Benefield fell at the No. 5 singles court in straight sets to give North Greenville their third point of the afternoon.
On the men's side of the court, the Valkyries improve to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries are now 3-1 at home this season with their lone loss coming against Limestone earlier in the season. Converse got off to a hot start by sweeping the doubles courts and earning a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the singles portion of the match, the Valkyries quickly jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after
Paul Berrouet and
Gregoire Legrand both won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 over their opponents at the No. 4 and No. 5 courts. North Greenville earned a point at the No. 3 singles flight, before
Merlin Bellet clinched the match for the Valkyries at the No. 1 singles court. Bellet's straight sets win was his 10
th win of the season and he know sits at 5-0 in Conference Carolinas action.
Leopold Morel won his second three-set match of the weekend, while
Cameron Davies took the No. 6 court with an 8-2 win over Kyle Praschan.
Next Up:
The Valkyries will have a little bit of time off before hosting Mount Olive and Francis Marion next weekend.
