Glogowski-Watson and Morel Extend Winning Streaks against Mount Olive

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a windy and overcast day at Converse University the Valkyries tennis programs both lost 6-1 to the University of Mount Olive in four-hour marathons on Friday afternoon.
 
The woman's team saw a two-match winning streak come to a close on Friday afternoon. The Valkyries are 7-7 overall and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas action this season. The women's match got off to a slow start as the Valkyries were swept in the doubles portion of the match.
 
Trailing 1-0 the Valkyries looked to fight back in the during the singles round against Mount Olive (10-2, 6-0 CC). Luiza Estrada and Valentina Aparicio both lost in straight sets at the No. 3 and No. 5 singles courts to give Mount Olive a 3-0 lead against the Valkyries. Tonya Glogowski-Watson then put the Valkyries on the board with a straight sets win at the No. 2 singles flight. Glogowski-Watson has now won three-straight matches dating back to last weekend. Maria Belen Vendrell lost in a three-set match to give Mount Olive the clinching fourth point. Brooke Benefield and Kelsy White both lost respectively the No. 4 and No. 6 courts.
 
On the men's side of the draw the Valkyries dropped to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas action. Meanwhile, Mount Olive improves to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in Conference play. The Valkyries lone bright spot in the doubles portion of the match came at the No. 2 doubles court. The Valkyries tandem of Merlin Bellet and Paul Berrouet won 6-2 and improve to 4-2 in conference action this season.
 
Heading into the singles portion of the match, the Valkyries trailed 1-0 to Mount Olive. Merlin Bellet lost at No. 1 singles in straight sets and ended a six-match winning streak. Prior to today's loss, Bellet had not lost in singles since February 20. At the No. 2 singles court, Leopold Morel picked up a hard fought 6-4, 7-6 victory to increase his winning streak to three matches.
 
Louka Queguiner and Paul Berrouet both lost in three set matches to give Mount Olive the clinching match point. Gregoire Legrand and Cameron Davies each played pro sets against their opponents at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles flights and lost to round out the Valkyries scoreboard.   
 
Next Up:
The Valkyries will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against nationally ranked Francis Marion.
