SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's and women's tennis teams defeated Southern Wesleyan University 7-0 and 6-1 respectively at the Converse tennis courts on Friday afternoon.
In the women's doubles action the Valkyries picked up their first court at No. 2 doubles. The Valkyries tandem of
Maria Belen Vendrell and
Marleen Prinz defeated Ashley Dube and Caley Chambers 6-1. At the No. 3 doubles flight the Warriors tandem of Camille Cunningham and Claire Blackwell defeated the Converse duo of
Valentina Aparicio and
Rebekka Braziel 6-2. Setting up a winner take all doubles point at the No. 1 doubles court. The Valkyries top tandem of
Tonya Glogowski-Watson and
Luiza Estrada fought through a close 6-4 match to give the Valkyries the early 1-0 match lead.
In singles action the women made quick work at the top of the lineup as Vendrell and Glogowski-Watson both picked up straight set wins to give Converse a 3-0 advantage. At the No. 3 singles court Estrada battled back from a first set loss to win 6-3, 6-2 over Dube and clinched the match for the Valkyries at 4-0. At the bottom of the lineup, Aparicio and Braziel both picked up straight set victories against Southern Wesleyan. At the No. 4 singles court
Brooke Benefield fell in straight sets to give the Warriors their only singles win of the afternoon.
With their singles wins today, both Estrada and Vendrell improve to 3-1 in Conference Carolinas action. Aparicio and Glogowski-Watson improve to 2-2 in conference play as the Valkyries now sit in fourth place in the conference standings.
On the men's side of the draw the Valkyries picked up their first ever sweep in program history with a 7-0 win over Southern Wesleyan. In the doubles portion of the match, the Valkyries top team of
Leopold Morel and
Louka Queguiner improved to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in Conference Carolinas action with a 6-1 win. The Valkyries No. 3 doubles tandem of
Gregoire Legrand and
Cameron Davies clinched the doubles point for Converse with a 6-1 win over Julio Lopes Polesi and Cole Farren. The Valkyries lone blemish of the day came at the No. 2 doubles court where the Valkyries dropped a 6-4 decision.
In the singles portion of the event the Valkyries picked up quick points from Queguiner and Legrand at the No. 3 and No. 4 flights. Both players won in straight sets, Legrand is now 4-0 in conference play while Queguiner is 3-1 in conference action at the No. 3 singles flight. Morel grinded out a three-set win to clinch the match for the Valkyries at No. 2 singles.
Merlin Bellet continues his stellar singles campaign with a three-set victory over Sarvesh Maria at the No. 1 singles flight. The freshman is now 9-2 overall and 4-0 in Conference Carolinas play at the No. 1 singles court. At the No. 6 singles flight,
Cameron Davies picked up a straight-sets win and
Paul Berrouet completed the sweep with a straight-sets win at the No. 5 singles court.

The Valkyries will have a quick turnaround as they play North Greenville tomorrow afternoon at the Converse tennis courts. The match is set for a 12:00 p.m. start.
