Valkyries Knockoff Chowan to Stay Undefeated in Conference Carolinas Play

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Converse University tennis programs both defeated Chowan by the final score of 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Rose Family Tennis Complex.

For the second consecutive match the Valkyries No. 3 doubles team of Brooke Benefield and Valentina Aparicio won by default to give Converse (5-5, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) an early advantage in doubles action. Unfortunately, the Valkyries No. 2 doubles team had to retire due to injury and that forced a winner take all at the No. 1 doubles flight. The Valkyries top tandem of Tonya Glogowski-Watson and Luiza Estrada gave Converse the elusive double point with a 6-1 win over Chowan's top team.

Before any tennis was played during the singles portion of the match, Rebekka Braziel and Kelsy White each won by default with at the No. 5 and No. 6 courts. Holding a 3-0 advantage in the match, Maria Belen Vendrell clinched the match for the Valkyries with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Estrada won a hard fought three set match (6-2, 4-6, 10-6) to give the Valkyries their fifth point of the afternoon. At the No. 4 singles court Aparicio nearly pulled off the Valkyries second three set win of the afternoon but fell 10-7 in the final set. Glogowski-Watson and Valentina Domenicone went shot-for-shot throughout the entire match, but it was Glogowski-Watson who won both tiebreaks to pick up the Valkyries sixth and final point of the match.

On the men's side of the court the Valkyries made quick work of the Hawks with 6-0 victories at all three courts during the doubles portion of the match. Leading 1-0 in the overall match score, Merlin Bellet gave the Valkyries a 2-0 edge with a 6-2, 6-1 straight sets win at the No. 1 singles court. Gregoire Legrand helped Converse increase their lead with a straight sets win at the No. 4 singles flight.

Holding a 3-0 advantage, Paul Berrouet won at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-2 to clinch the match for Converse. Louka Queguiner fought back from an opening set loss to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-1 over Hesley Masara of Chowan. Leopold Morel was unable to pull out the three set victory at No. 2 singles as Santino Jose Sormani won the only court for Chowan on the afternoon. Cameron Davies rounded out the Valkyries win with a straight sets victory at the No. 6 singles flight.
