Valkyries Sweep King to Start Conference Play

BRISTOL, TENN. – The Converse University tennis programs swept the King Tornado on Saturday afternoon at the King University Tennis Courts, the women's team won 4-3 and the men's team won 6-1 over the Tornado.
 
The women's team opened the afternoon with a sweep in doubles action. The Valkyries top tandem of Tonya Glogowski-Watson and Luiza Estrada won 6-3 over the Tornado. Converse captured the elusive doubles point with a 6-4 win by the duo of Marleen Prinz and Maria Belen Vendrell.
 
The Valkyries won the No. 6 singles by forfeit and held a 2-0 lead over the Tornado. Prinz picked up a win in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) to put the Valkyries up 3-0. Converse then lost on both the No. 1 and No. 3 singles courts to give the Tornado life. Glogowski-Watson lost a hard fought three-set battle at the No. 2 singles flight to setup a winner take all match at the No. 5 court. Valentina Aparicio was up for the challenge as she bounced back to win the final two sets of the match 6-0, 7-5.
 
With the win on Saturday the women's team improves to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play. This is the first time since the 2020 spring season that the Valkyries open up Conference action with a win.
 
The men's team got out to a hot start with wins at both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles courts. The Valkyries top team of Leopold Morel and Louka Queguiner defeated the Tornado's top duo 6-3. The Valkyries tandem of Merlin Bellet and Paul Berrouet picked up a 6-3 win at the No. 2 doubles court to take the doubles point.
 
Cameron Davies picked up the first win in singles action with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 singles court. Berrouet won 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 5 flight to give the Valkyries a 3-0 lead over the Tornado. A 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 3 court by Queguiner gave the Valkyries a match clinching 4-0 advantage over King. Legrand won a hard-fought battle at the No. 4 singles flight with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreak) to give the Valkyries their fifth point of the afternoon. At the No. 1 flight Bellet bounced back after a 1-6 opening set loss to win the final two sets 6-1, 6-1. The Valkyries only loss came at the No. 2 singles court.
 
With the win on Saturday the men's team improves 5-5 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas action. Today's win marks the Valkyries first ever win in Conference Carolinas.
 
Next Up:
The Valkyries will have a week to prepare before traveling to the Tar Heel State next weekend to battle both Chowan and Barton.
