Converse Drops Doubleheader to UVA Wise

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse Valkyries softball team dropped its first two games of the season by scores of 14-4 and 3-0 to the UVA Wise Cavaliers.
 
Game 1 Final: UVA Wise 14, Converse 4
Game 2 Final: UVA Wise 3, Converse 0
Records: Converse (0-2), UVA Wise (2-0)
 
Key Innings (Game 1)
  • Top 1 – Jenna McDermott would cross home plate early in the inning to give UVA Wise their first point of the game and of the 2022 season. Alexis Miles would walk, then steal second and finally be brought home after Sarah Barret singled to right field, making the score 2-0 in UVA Wise's favor.
  • Top 2 – A single up the middle by McDermott would send Megan Wilson home for the Cavs, giving them the lead of 3-0.
  • Bottom 2 – Converse would answer, getting 4 points up on the board to lead the game. Aaliyah Newman flied out to left field, allowing Abbigale Outlaw to score, advancing Grace McKinney to second base and Faith Hauser to first. The next batter up would send Hauser and McKinney home, making the score 3-3. Finally, Brooklyn McElrath's single up the middle would allow Emily Ingle to advance home, making it a 4-3 ballgame.
  • Top 5 – McDermott's grand slam RBI would seal the game for the Cavs. Barrett would score an unearned run the play before, giving the Cavs a 4-3 advantage. McDermott's bomb would make it an 8-4 game.
  • Top 6 – UVA Wise would run away with the game, with 6 runs scored in the inning. Kaylee Jones would score the first one, followed by McKenna Falwell, Wilson and Barrett, Michaela Barney and finally, McDermott, once again. Converse would be given their first loss of the season, 14-4.
Key Innings (Game 2)
Converse would figure out their defense, only allowing UVA Wise to advance home 3 times.
  • Top 1 – Jones would single to right field at her at-bat. Following it, Miles would triple, sending Jones home.
  • Top 4 – Jones would hit her first homerun of the night, giving the Cavs the 2-0 advantage.
  • Top 6 – Jones hit her second homerun, making it a 3-0 game. Converse, unable to answer, would drop this game 3-0 to UVA Wise.
