MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Converse University women's basketball team fell 76-59 on Saturday afternoon to the Chowan Hawks.
With the loss on Saturday afternoon the Valkyries have now 11-straight matches dating back to a December 3
rd home win against Southern Wesleyan. Converse came out of the gate strong defensively and held Chowan to just 22 percent shooting in the first quarter and 29 percent shooting in the second quarter. Strong second half shooting gave the Hawks the edge over the Valkyries and proved to be the difference maker in the game.
First Quarter:
- Chowan started the game on a 5-0 run before Zahra Cross knocked down a three-pointer at the 8:10 mark of the opening period.
- The Valkyries stayed within striking distance of the Hawks and with 2:57 to play Ayanna Parker gave Converse their first lead of the game at 12-10.
- Despite trailing 17-14 at the end of the first period, the Valkyries defense held Chowan to just 22 percent shooting in the first quarter of action.
Second Quarter:
- Once again, the Hawks started the quarter on a 5-0 run before Cross was able to knock down another three-pointer to stop the run.
- Alisa Davenport hit the Valkyries second three-pointer of the quarter and Converse was once again within a possession of Chowan.
- Both teams were held scoreless the final 2:12 of the second quarter. Converse went into the halftime break trailing 35-29.
Third Quarter:
- Cross scored the opening points of the second half for either side with a jumper in the paint. Moments later Colbie Perry recorded a layup and the Valkyries trailed 37-33.
- Following a made jumper by Sydney Wilson at the 6:56 mark of the period, the Valkyries offense went silent going nearly three-minutes without a made basket.
- Chowan shot an even 50 percent in the third period and was able to pull away with a 55-42 advantage over Converse entering the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
- Keyshuna Fair opened the quarter on a personal 5-0 run to pull the Valkyries back within single digits of the Hawks.
- Chowan countered with a 10-0 run as the Valkyries offense once again fell silent. Nearly four-minutes of game time passed before Cross hit a mid-range jumper.
- The Hawks shot 52 percent from the field and 75 percent from three-point range in the final quarter of action. The Valkyries were held to just nine shot attempts in the fourth quarter.
Cross led the team with 18 points, followed by 9 points of Davenport.
Jordan Brown led the team with minutes played (31), rebounds (8) and assists (4).
Destiny Robinson led the Hawks with a 16 point, 10 rebound effort. Olivia Gaither contributed 12 points, while Demetria Bland and Tyaysia Sharpe each had 5 assists in the game.
