O’Neill’s Hat Trick Not Enough for Converse

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's lacrosse team fell 16-8 to Shorter University on Wednesday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.
 
Converse (0-2) has dropped their second straight game after scoring the opening goal of the contest. On Wednesday afternoon, Libby Stevens (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored the games opening goal with 13:48 to play in the first quarter. Moments later Sydney Jones scored the equalizer and the Valkyries never led again.
 
With 13:46 to play in the second quarter Alexis Mount scored an unassisted goal to give Shorter (1-3) a 6-3 advantage. The Valkyries scored a pair of goals quickly from Haleigh McSwain and Brenna Everette to pull within a goal of Shorter. At the halftime break the Valkyries trailed 7-5 to the Hawks.
 
Within the first 30 seconds of the third quarter, Cassidy O'Neill scored the opening goal of the period and the Valkyries were back within a goal. Shorter rattled off four unanswered goals to pull away 11-6 with 6:11 to play in the period. O'Neill scored back-to-back goals to complete her hat trick with 3:19 to play in the third quarter. Shorter finished the game by scoring five unanswered goals against the Valkyries defense.

  • O'Neill led the team with three goals on the day, McSwain added a pair of goals and an assist. Brunner made 12 saves in goal for the Valkyries on Wednesday afternoon.
 Next Up:
  • The Valkyries will be back in action this coming Saturday afternoon against Oglethorpe University. The match is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at Hayden Abney Fulp Field located in Weisiger Stadium.
