Valkyries Unable to Take Advantage of Quick Start over Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. – On the road again, the Converse women's basketball team would drop their contest 60-50 to Belmont Abbey on Tuesday night.
 
Starting off on the right foot with 19 points, Converse (3-20, 2-18 Conference Carolinas) only being able to produced a combined 15 points in the second and third quarters would end up hurting them in the long run compared to Belmont Abbey's (16-7, 14-5 Conference Carolinas) 42 points in those quarters.
 
First Quarter:
  • Belmont Abbey won the opening tip-off, immediately scoring a three-pointer. Jordan Brown would answer for the Valkyries with a jumper.
  • Colbie Perry's three would send the Valkyries on a scoring streak, scoring 12 unanswered points.
  • A layup and free throw by Brittany Autry would give the Crusaders their last points of the quarter while the Valkyries would go on to score five more giving Converse the 19-10 lead going into the second quarter.
Second Quarter:
  • Once again, Belmont Abbey would be the first to score. A Sydney Wilson layup would put the Valkyries on the board for the second quarter.
  • The Crusaders would go on a 9-0 run, taking over the lead with a score of 26-23. Lindsey Hardin's layup with 1:20 left in the half would bring the Valkyries back within one point.
  • Jo Snow would shoot a last second three-pointer giving the Crusaders a 29-26 advantage going into halftime.
Third Quarter:
  • Both teams would have a slow start coming out of the locker-rooms. Autry would score first after 3:15 had been shaved off the clock.
  • Back-to-back layups from Wilson would bring the Valkyries within five points of the lead.
  • 11 straight points from the Crusaders would make it a 46-31 game. Scoring just a free throw and a layup the rest of the quarter, the Valkyries would trail 52-34 going into the final quarter of play.
Final Quarter:
  • A deep three and a pair of free throws by Alisa Davenport would give Converse the first points of the quarter.
  • The Valkyries would try to make a comeback, outscoring the Crusaders 16-8, however, Belmont Abbey would be too far ahead to catch.
  • In the end, Belmont Abbey would pick up the 60-50 win at home against Converse.
Perry led in points for Converse with 12 on the night. Wilson followed with 10 points, five rebounds and two steals. Zahra Cross had seven points, five rebounds and six assists, a team high. Brown led the team with 10 rebounds.

Autry led Belmont Abbey in points (20), rebounds (11) and blocks (6). Snow followed her with 15 points. Taylor Stelley led in assists with eight while Peyton Nation led in steals with four.
 
Next Up:
The Valkyries will travel to Due West, S.C. tomorrow night to face the Erskine Flying Fleet at 5:00 p.m.
