Valkyries Unable to Defend Off Tigers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In their return home, the Converse softball team was unable to hold off Edward Waters as they fell 9-3 and 5-1 to the Tigers.

Game 1 Notes:
  • Bottom 6 - Down 7-0, Brooke Scruggs would be put on base after walking. Following her, Dallas Singleton doubled to center field allowing Scruggs to advance to third. Ryan Finazzo double to left field on her at-bat, sending Scruggs and Singleton home. Maggie Griffis hit a single to left field next. This allowed Finazzo to score a run and making it a 7-3 game in Edward Waters favor.
  • The Valkyries were unable to get anymore runs up on the board while the Tigers scored two more runs, making the final 9-3.
  • Serrah Ballard (0-4) would get the loss for Converse after pitching two innings. Reagan Owens pitched four innings with two strikeouts and Belle Roper pitched one inning with one strikeout.
Game 2 Notes:
  • Bottom 7 – Going into the last inning of game two, the Valkyries would be behind 5-0 to the Tigers. Abbigale Outlaw was up-to-bat and hit a single to center field. On a wild pitch to Emily Ingle, Outlaw was able to advance to second. Ingle would ground out but it allowed Outlaw to get to third base. At her at-bat, Roper single to center field which sent Outlaw home to score a run for Converse. In the final play of the game, Grace McKinney popped up to short stop, ending the game with Edward Waters having the 5-1 advantage.
  • Roper (0-1) would be given the loss for the Valkyries after pitching three innings and throwing two strikeouts. Owens also came in to pitch for four innings, producing four strikeouts.

Next Up:
The Valkyries will travel to Hartsville, S.C. on Friday and Saturday, February 18 and 19 to compete in the Coker Tournament against Flagler College and Coker University.
