GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 78-67 to Limestone on Saturday afternoon at the Timken Center.
Converse is now 6-8 overall on the season and remains winless away from the Weisiger Center. Meanwhile, Limestone improves to 4-7 overall and is now 2-0 all-time against the Valkyries. Sophomore guard
Trey Smith scored a career high 24-points for Converse and
Bosko Bojovic recorded his first double-double of the season with a 14-point, 14-rebound performance against the Saints.
First Half Notes:
- Both teams turned the ball over on their opening possession, Ben Gahlert scored the first points of the game for Limestone.
- The Saints opened the game on an 8-0 run, before Uzziah Dawkins scored the first points of the game for Converse at the 17:59 mark of the period.
- With 14:09 to play in the half, Earl Burgess III hit a jumper in the paint to cut the Saints lead to 12-8. Moments later Richard Nunez capped off an 8-0 scoring spurt for Limestone with a layup.
- A fastbreak three-pointer from Trey Smith with three seconds to go in the half gave the Valkyries a little bit of momentum going into the halftime break down 40-22.
- Converse shot 32 percent from the field, 18 percent from three-point range and 50 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
- Jordan Preaster missed the first shot of the second half for Limestone, while Smith hit his first midrange jumper for Converse to get the Valkyries on the board first.
- Bojovic and Smith went on a quick 5-0 spurt to bring the Valkyries back within striking distance at 42-29 with 17:52 to play in the game.
- At the 12:32 to mark of the second half, Aaron Porcil found Smith for a fastbreak three-pointer. Zach Laird fouled Smith in the process and the junior guard converted the four-point play and Converse trailed 56-45.
- Converse continued to chip away at the Saints lead and with 1:14 to play, Burgess III hit a free throw to bring the Valkyries back within single-digits at 75-66.
- Time ran out for Converse as the Saints converted on free throw opportunities down the stretch.
- Converse outscored Limestone 45-38 in the second half, the Valkyries shot 45 percent in the second half from the field. The Valkyries also shot 46 percent from three-point range and 69 percent from the free throw line.
