BELMONT, N.C. – For the first time in program history the Converse University field hockey team defeated Belmont Abbey, 2-0 on the road at Alumni Field.
The two teams battled through rainy conditions as the Valkyries found themselves on top for the first time at Belmont Abbey. Historically the Valkyries had trouble playing on the grass field, but today the Valkyries overcame that and outshot the Crusaders 12-4.
Both sides went back-and-forth in the opening period of play as they ended in a 0-0 stalemate after the opening 15-minutes of action. Then midway through the second quarter,
Catalina Pistaccio found
Lotte Kanters for the Valkyries first goal of the day.
With a 1-0 lead secured in the first half the Valkyries defense came out even stronger in the second half as they looked to preserve the shutout. The Valkyries outshot the Crusaders 9-0 in the third and fourth quarters of the match. Kanters recorded her second goal of the afternoon with just five minutes remaining in the contest.
Kathryn Daniels made crucial saves and earned her first shutout of the season.
