Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Converse Downed by Wingate on the Road

WINGATE, N.C. – The Converse women's basketball team was unable to pull together a win as they dropped their first road game of the season, 73-43, to Wingate on Wednesday afternoon. Converse falls to 0-3 on the season while Wingate improves to 3-0.

Wingate got off to a quick start in the first quarter with a deep three going in from Emily Hege. The 'Dogs would score two more points before Converse got on the board with back-to-back three-pointers from Alisa Davenport. The 'Dogs then went on an eight-point run before Sydney Wilson answered for the Valkyries. Wilson's free throw would be the last point of the quarter as the Valkyries went into the second quarter down 17-13.

Colbie Perry got on the board for Converse with a three-ball, bringing the Valkyries within one point of Wingate's lead. Five points from the 'Dogs would hurt Converse as they were only able to answer with two points off of Zahra Cross' free throws. Wingate picked up the pace throughout the quarter, going into halftime with a 36-20 lead.

Coming out of the break, the Bulldogs did not slow down as they scored back-to-back threes to gain a 22-point advantage over Converse. Davenport's three-pointer and Cross' layup would be the only points recorded for the Valkyries to start out the second half.

Down 62-27 to start the final quarter of play, Wilson brought the Wingate lead down to 33 with two made free throws. Jennifer Pongnon then answered with three points of her own followed by a set of free throws and a layup from Cross. An Anna Cary layup would be the last points scored of the game as the Valkyries were defeated 73-43.

Cross led the Valkyries in points (14) and rebounds (6) while Davenport followed with 11 points. Amaia Parkins led the team in assists (3) and blocks (2) and followed Cross in rebounds with five.
