Wolves Spoil Valkyries Home Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 68-56 to Newberry on Wednesday evening inside a sold out Weisiger Center.  
 
The Valkyries lost their first home opener in program history on Wednesday evening and they fall to 0-3 on the year. Uzziah Dawkins led the Valkyries in the scoring with 18-points on the evening and Sigurd Lorange finished second on the team with 16-points. Bosko Bojovic finished with a team high six rebounds and Jordan Warlick had a team best five assists.   
 
1st Half Notes:
  • Jay Mitchell scored the opening points of the game with a layup at the 18:59 mark of the period. QuanDaveon McCollum scored the first points of the game for Newberry at the free throw line.
  • The Valkyries used the opening momentum to race out to a 9-4 advantage over the Wolves. Newberry countered with a 16-2 run and silenced the hostile home crowd.
  • For the rest of the period, Converse slowly chipped away at the Wolves lead and came with two on multiple occasions throughout the period. The Valkyries trailed going into the halftime break down 34-29.
  • Converse shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, 38 percent from three-point range and 0 percent from the free throw line.
 
2nd Half Notes:
  • Bosko Bojovic scored the first points of the second half for Converse. A few moments later Dawkins and Warlick hit back-to-back baskets and the Valkyries cut the lead to 38-36.
  • With 12:50 to play in the period, Ny'Gel Boozer found Dawkins on a fastbreak layup to tie the game at 40.
  • The two teams then went back-and-forth for a few moments before Newberry went on a late run and took a 10-point lead with 6:30 to play in the match. The Valkyries were never able to get the lead back within single digits.
  • Converse scored 27 points in the second half and 44 percent from the field. The Valkyries also shot 14 percent from three-point range and 60 percent from the free throw line.

The Valkyries will stay at home this weekend and face Allen University on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
